I’ve found the free trial of Back-In-Time is really helpful if you want to delete specific versions of backed up files from a Time Machine volume. If you’re trying to make space on your TM volume, I find it really helpful that on one screen you can see all versions of a backed up file, and decide which to delete (and which to keep).

Note that when you delete large files, you’ll often have to wait hours and hours (in Time Machine or Back-In-Time) until the deletion is complete — be patient, and don’t start the process unless you have time to let it finish!
